George Winter is pleased to announce his entry into the race for Peel Board of Education Trustee, Wards 6 and 11. To date, he is the only candidate to have actually served on the Board as a Trustee.
Recently retired from the Toronto Board of Education as a secondary school Special Education and English teacher, George has had a lifelong passion for quality education. Having worked with students at Metro West Detention Centre for more than ten years, he understands what can happen to those students who fall through the cracks.
George and his wife Fern have lived in Mississauga since 1974 and in Ward 6 for over 30 years. In fact, the two Winter kids attended many of the schools that will fall under George's watchful eye - schools where he was an active volunteer and School Council President.
George also understands the broader workings of the Board of Education, having served 16 months as a Trustee appointed to fill a mid-term vacancy. He was a clear choice, selected by the Trustees on a first ballot from amongst 52 applicants.
Always active in the broader community, George formed and was president of the first Central Creditview Residents' Association. He organized a multiple year campaign in an attempt to have a neighborhood school built.
George was chosen the Liberal candidate for MPP in 1999, seeking to involve himself in the decision making process on educational programs and funding at the provincial level.
With a keen interest in the process of community consultation and participation, George ran in the 2010 mayoralty contest specifically to stimulate in-depth discussions on the future of our City and to hear what the citizens had to say at the thousands of doors on which he knocked throughout the campaign.
As a community activist, retired teacher and experienced Trustee, George Winter wants to put his energy and lifelong dedication to education at the service of the children and parents of wards 6 and 11. He knows children are our most valuable resource. George Winter is qualified and ready to work FULL TIME on their behalf.
